The first day of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 Super 12 encounter saw New Zealand and England win their encounters against Australia and Afghanistan respectively on Saturday, October 22. The victories have helped both sides in making some much-needed advancements in the points table.

The reigning champions Australia suffered a humiliating 89-run loss against the Kiwis at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Batting first New Zealand posted a competitive total of 200/3 on the board riding on an outstanding knock of an unbeaten 92 runs off 58 deliveries by wicketkeeper-batter Devon Conway. Only pacer Josh Hazlewood (2/41) and leggie Adam Zampa (1/39) were the picks of the bowlers for the Aussies. In reply, the defending champions lost plot of their chase right from the very beginning as the BlackCaps bowlers chipped in with wickets at regular intervals.

Only power-hitter Glenn Maxwell showed some fightback scoring 28 runs off 20 balls. But, once he was castled by Ish Sodhi in the 14th over, there was absoultely no point of a comeback for the Australians as they were bowled out for just 111 in the 18th over. Tim Southee and Mitchell Santner finished with three scalps to their names with Trent Boult picking up two wickets while Sodhi and Lockie Ferguson took a scalp each.

In the other game, the Afghanistan batters were simply not good enough as the English bowlers made good use of the Perth surface to restrict the opposition to a below par total of 112. The scenario could have been a lot worse for the Afghans had it not been for Ibrahim Zadran's 32 and Usman Ghani's 30.

For the Three Lions, star all-rounder Sam Curran finished with outstanding figures of 5/10, Ben Stokes and Mark Wood picked up two each while Chris Woakes finished with a wicket. What should have been a regular chase for England turned out to be a near disaster and at 81/4, in the 14th over, the Afghans seemed to be right on top before middle order sensation Liam Livingstone's blistering 21-ball 29 took the Three Lions over the line by five wickets in the penultimate over.
