Another cracker jack of a contest was witnessed in the match no. 25 of the ongoing Men's T20 World Cup 2024. At the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and invited the USA to bat first. The decision worked wonders, as Arshdeep Singh picked a couple of wickets in the very first over to put pressure straight away on the opposition.
However, Steven Taylor and Nitish Kumar played handy knocks on a slow surface to add some oxygen to USA's first innings' total. Later, star all-rounder Corey Anderson too added 15 runs off 12 balls to help the hosts post 110 runs on the board. Indian pacers did well to contain the total, which had turned tricky to chase down of late.

When it came to the chase, the Indians were handed a major shocker when star batter Virat Kohli was sent packing by Saurabh Netravalkar for a golden duck. Things didn't go as planned for the Men in Blue, as they couldn't free their arms to score at will. Rishabh Pant did try to stabilize the innings alongside Suryakumar Yadav, but departed for an under run-a-ball 18.
However, Shivam Dube joined Suryakumar in the middle and both the Mumbai boys ensured that there were no further hiccups despite a difficulty in scoring runs smoothly. Nonetheless, the visitors recovered well and sealed the deal with a little under a couple of overs to spare. The senior batter also went onto score an unbeaten half-century and returned to form. With this convincing win, India also secured a place in the Super 8s by moving to the top of the table in the Group A.
Talking Points:
1. Arshdeep Singh - The Sardaar of Wickets
The left-arm pacer bowled the first over of the match and struck on the very first delivery of the match. Arshdeep became the first Indian bowler to take a wicket on the first ball in T20 World Cups. However, that wasn't enough as the Guna-born also got the better of Andries Gous. In his second spell, the pacer got two more wickets, sending Nitish Kumar and Harmeet Singh back in the huddle. Arshdeep ended his spell with 4-0-9-4 and was awarded Player of the Match for this performance.

2. SKY show
Suryakumar Yadav had a couple of forgettable outings in the previous fixtures, and was desperate to come good in today's game. A determined Mumbai-born cemented his feet on the pitch and kept grinding hard, fighting hard for each run on an uncanny surface. At the end, SKY made an unbeaten half-century and saw the team through, saving Indian from what could've been a big collapse.
Who Said What?
Arshdeep Singh, Player of the Match, said:
Very very happy with the performance. In the last two games, I gave away little more runs, wasn't happy with that. The team always shows belief in me and keep backing me, I had to deliver for them. The wicket is very inducive to fast bowlers and it's helping us get some seam movement. The plan was simple, pitch it in the wicket and let the ball do the talking. Don't give easy balls to score, our batsmen are also facing difficulties to score runs. The plan was to hit the hard lengths. In conditions like this, you can use the wicket more. When you are playing intl cricket, you need to have some routines and the way you take care of your body counts. All the bowlers have done extremely well, looking forward to do the same in the next leg as well.
Aaron Jones, USA skipper, said:
10-15 runs short. If we got 130 then it would have been a tough total, that's how it goes sometimes. The boys were very disciplined, really proud of the bowling unit. Feels good, this is what we wanted for USA cricket, enjoying it. We will recalibrate now, have a few meetings and come back strong. The wicket was a bit tricky, more suited for seam bowling. That's why no spin. Mostly he (Monank Patel) should be fit for the last game, just got a slight niggle.
Rohit Sharma, India skipper, said:
Knew it would be tough. Credit to us for the way we held our nerve and got that partnership. Credit to Surya and Dube for showing the maturity and taking us through. Lot of these guys have played cricket together, very happy to see their progress. Saw them last year in MLC as well, they are all hard-working guys. We knew bowlers had to take the lead, run scoring was difficult. All the bowlers did the job, particularly Arshdeep. You want options and we should be able to use them as and when we can. Today, the pitch favoured the seamers so wanted to use him. It is a big relief, playing cricket here wasn't easy. We had to stick through till the end in all 3 games. Will take a lot of confidence from these wins.
