Pakistan’s campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026 has ended on a disappointing note, both on and off the field. While the team failed to secure a place in the semifinals, an off-field controversy involving an unnamed member of the Pakistan squad has grabbed headlines. According to reports, the player was fined by team management after allegedly misbehaving with a female housekeeping staff member at the team hotel in Kandy, Sri Lanka.
According to a Telecom Asia Sport report, the incident took place at the Golden Crown Hotel in Pallekele, where the Pakistan team was staying during the Super 8 stage of the tournament. Sources cited that the episode occurred shortly before Pakistan’s final Super 8 clash against Sri Lanka. During a routine housekeeping interaction, the player allegedly behaved inappropriately with a female staff member. The situation escalated quickly, forcing the staff member to raise an alarm and call for help.
Hotel employees rushed to her assistance after hearing the commotion, and the matter was immediately reported to Pakistan team manager Navaid Cheema. Senior officials at the hotel were reportedly upset with the incident and initially wanted strict action to be taken against the player.

However, the issue was eventually handled internally. Cheema apologised to the hotel management on behalf of the player and imposed a financial penalty for his behaviour. While the identity of the cricketer has not been made public, sources indicate that the player may still face further disciplinary action.
"Before Pakistan's last Super Eight match against Sri Lanka, a Pakistan World Cup squad player misbehaved with a female housekeeping staff member. The staff shouted and called for help, at which the hotel staff came to her rescue and reported the matter to Pakistan team manager Navaid Cheema. The top management of Golden Crown Hotel wanted the matter to be dealt with strongly, but Cheema apologised on behalf of the player and fined him for misbehaviour," the report said.
The matter is expected to be reviewed by the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) disciplinary committee once the squad returns home. The board could decide to impose additional sanctions depending on the findings of its internal investigation.

The controversy has come following Pakistan's already facing criticism for their performance in the tournament. Despite defeating Sri Lanka by five runs in their final Super 8 match, Pakistan failed to qualify for the semifinals due to an inferior net run-rate. Their inconsistent performances throughout the competition led to them narrowly missing out on a place in the last four.
Incidents of misconduct involving Pakistan players and support staff on overseas tours have surfaced in the past as well. Reports pointed out that young batter Haider Ali had previously faced legal trouble during a Pakistan Shaheens tour of England, though he was later released due to a lack of evidence. In another case, team masseur Malang Ali had also been fined for misbehaviour with a female staff member during a tour of Malaysia a few years ago.
