Despite being in control for the most part of the second innings, Pakistan lost to India in the final over of their Super 12 match on Sunday, October 23. The Men in Blue needed one run off the last ball as Ravichandran Ashwin played an aerial drive over mid-off to finish things off in style which eventually helped India register their first win of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022

The Pakistan camp was in utter disbelief and looked absolutely heartbroken following the defeat at the hands of their arch-rivals. Now, even after a few days of the incident, Pakistan batter Iftikhar Ahmed revealed that the team is still hurting. But also appreciated captain Babar Azam and their coach for stepping up and motivating the team.

“The hurt remains after losing such a big match. We were heartbroken. The way Babar and the management supported the players, it was good. Babar and coaches told us that it was not our last game, everybody put in the effort. So our morale is high,” said the 32-year-old while talking to AFP.

Iftikhar himself will be motivated to do well against Zimbabwe after a brilliant knock of 51 runs off 34 balls. Pakistan’s middle order was heavily criticised coming into the tournament but Iftikhar was at his immaculate best as he helped the Men in Green reach 159 after a shaky start. Even though the team couldn’t get the win, Pakistan still remain to be one of the favourites to qualify for the semi-finals of the competition.

The players are hungry to perform: Iftikhar Ahmed

Up next, Pakistan will face Zimabwe on October 28 at the Perth Stadium in Perth. However, Pakistan have dominated the Craig Ervine-led side over the last few years but in a World Cup, anything can happen at any moment. Thus, Iftikhar remains cautious and aims to return back to winning ways.

“Zimbabwe is an international team and we have to play strong against them like any other team. Important to play well and keep up the confidence. The players are hungry to perform,” the 32-year-old said.
