Often hailed as "The Fortress," the Gabba has long been a mainstay of Australian cricket over the years, renowned for its formidable home record in Test matches. However, recent developments have indicated that this iconic venue is set to be replaced by a more cutting-edge facility.
Australian luminary, Allan Border, in recent times, has been a vocal advocate for starting anew, proposing the demolition of the Gabba to make way for a state-of-the-art stadium at a different location. He envisions this new venue as a multi-sport facility that could play a pivotal role in hosting events for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
According to reports from the Courier Mail, Cricket Australia is poised to unveil a seven-year Test match schedule that will lock in fixtures for Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide through to the 2030-31 season, with unfortunately not having the Gabba on its roster.
Border, who unveiled his marauding statue at the venue in 2021 and one who had a stellar career there, couldn't hide his sorrow but thought the move to make a new venue would end up in good stead and that it would ultimately be for the greater good of the Olympics.

The uncertainty surrounding the Gabba has raised broader concerns across other sports, including the AFL, which also depends on the venue. Border has strongly urged the authorities responsible for the 2032 Games to address and resolve the issue promptly.
“Because we have an election coming up, nobody wants to touch the hot potato of announcing where the main venue would be,” added Border.
As of 2024, Australia has contested 66 men’s Test matches at the Gabba, securing victory in 42, drawing 13, tying 1, and suffering defeat in only 10.
