Records were shattered during the fourth game of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 between South Africa and Sri Lanka on Saturday, October 07 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. The South African batters put on a breathtaking display as they registered the highest team total in ODI World Cup history. Quinton de Kock (100 off 84), Rassie van der Dussen (108 off 110) and Aiden Markram (106 off 54) all scored hundreds as no Sri Lankan bowler was spared.

The right-arm seamer Matheesha Pathirana, who was making his World Cup debut even leaked 26 runs in the 43rd over as Markram took him to cleaners. Markram struck the second ball of the over for a four down the ground and Pathirana bowled four wides on the very next delivery.

Markram continued his assault as clobbered the next two balls for a four and took a single on the fifth delivery. The right-handed batter finished the over in style as he pulled him for a massive six over deep square leg to make 26 runs off the over.

Watch the bizarre over here:

Markram continued his sensational innings and etched his name in the record books as he scored the fastest hundred in ODI World Cup history off just 49 balls. The 29-year-old scored 106 off just 54 balls as he struck 14 fours and three sixes in his innings. He left behind Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien who had achieved the feat in 50 balls vs England in Bengaluru during the 2011 World Cup.

South Africa score 400 for eighth time in ODIs

Markram scored 106 off just 54 balls as he struck 14 fours and three sixes in his innings. Courtesy of his onslaught, Pathirana finished his spell with figures of 1/95 in ten overs which is also the most expensive spell by a Sri Lankan bowler in World Cup history.

Meanwhile, South Africa breached the 400-run mark third time in World Cup history becoming the only team to achieve the feat more than once. It was also their eighth 400-plus total in ODI history making them the team with most 400 plus totals followed by India who have achieved the feat six times.
