Ajinkya Rahane appreciated the manner in which Shubman Gill performed with the bat in the recently-concluded Test between England and India. Rahane extolled Gill's intent and character during his stellar knocks of 269 and 161 in India's first and second innings, respectively.

Rahane applauded the manner in which Gill came back despite the five-wicket loss in the series opener at Headingley. He uploaded his remarks in a short video on X. The cricket community has shared sentiments similar to those of 37-year-old in the comments section in admiration of the blitz by the Baggy Blues under the leadership of their newest skipper.

Gill's knocks ensured India ensured to post competitive totals in both their innings. More than 40% (42.41%) of the runs were scored by the red-ball skipper. A total of 43 fours and 11 sixes comprised the two knocks in aggregate. With this, Gill shattered quite a few records and made his way into an elite list of Test cricketers. It was also India's first time amassing more than 1,000 runs (1,014 - 687 in 1st; 427 in 2nd) in aggregate across both innings.

It wasn't just Gill who came to the party though; Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep had outstanding games too. Siraj and Deep picked up six and four wickets, respectively, in England's first innings to hand a vital 180-run lead to their team. Deep ended the game with career-best match Test figures of 10/187, which were also the best Test match figures by an Indian against England in England.

The two sides will now square off at Lord's with the series poised at one apiece. Gill & Co. would be aiming on capitalising on their momentum and transferring it forward into the third match. On the other hand, England would be keen on enhancing their performance and deliver a better showing with bat and ball at the Home of Cricket. The match is scheduled to get underway on Thursday, July 10.
