Alex Carey has been in excellent form behind the stumps in the ongoing Ashes. In the closing stages on Day 1 of the second Ashes Test at The Gabba in Brisbane, Carey took a magnificent catch to dismiss Gus Atkinson.
Starc bowled a delivery on a hard length, directed at Atkinson's body in the 67th over. The right-handed batter tried to flick it away, but all he managed was a top edge over the wicketkeeper's head. Carey turned around and ran full speed before putting in a dive to catch the ball with both hands. However, as he made the dive and caught the ball, Marnus Labuschagne collided with him with a dive of his own.
Carey did really well not to get distracted, keeping the ball under control. Labuschagne was relieved after the catch was completed, and he hugged Carey while lying on the floor.
This was an important wicket, as Atkinson showed in the last Test match how productive he can be with the willow. This time, Atkinson only faced three balls and scored four runs before his innings was cut short by Carey's brilliance.
Take a look at the exemplary catch below:
The dramatic catch also helped Starc bag his fifth wicket. He had dismissed Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Harry Brook, and Will Jacks before picking up Atkinson's wicket. A couple of deliveries later, the left-arm seamer got the better of Brydon Carse.
