Akash Deep secured his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket after dismissing Jamie Smith in the second session of Day 5 of the second Test of the ongoing five-match series between England and India. Jamie departed for a valiant 99-ball 88-run knock, leaving India just two wickets short of levelling the series after a deflating five-wicket defeat in the series opener.

Deep persisted with the short-ball topic to Jamie, who had smacked consecutive maximums to deep backward square leg and deep mid-wicket off the deliveries leading up to the wicket-taking one. It was an off-cutter outside the off stump which did the trick. The Bihar-born was understandably ecstatic after the catch was completed at the fence by Washington Sundar.

The Bengal pacer, who his playing just his eighth game, had secured his first five-for. The right-arm pacer, who had come into this game in to replace a rested Jasprit Bumrah, snaffled four of the five wickets of the hosts during their run-chase of 608. His first four wickets included Ben Duckett (25 off 15), Joe Root (6 off 16), Ollie Pope (24 off 50), and Harry Brook (23 off 31).

Deep was wonderful earlier in the game too. He complemented Mohammed Siraj perfectly well to pick up a four-wicket haul in the English first innings. One amongst his four wickets was that of Brook (158 off 234), who was looking to take the game away from the visitors alongside Jamie. The rest of the six wickets were secured by Siraj, as the Shubman Gill-led outfit secured a decisive lead.

Gill himself was incredible in this game. He scored a total of 430 runs across both innings to give India a massive advantage and opportunity of exerting their dominance on the opposition. His scores of 269 and 161 in their first and second innings, respectively, shattered quite a few records for both himself and his team, who ended up being the more dominant of the two at Edgbaston.
