Rishabh Pant sustained a left index finger injury while trying to stop a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah during Day 1 of the third Test between India and England at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground in London. He didn't keep wickets in the rest of the Test match as Dhruv Jurel stepped in. Pant, however, did bat in both innings and registered scores of 74 and nine, while battling pain.
On India's first day of training after losing the third Test by 22 runs at the Home of Cricket, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said that Pant's injury will be monitored ahead of the fourth Test, which is scheduled to take place at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester, from Wednesday, July 23, onwards.
There were reports of Pant playing as a specialist batter in the Manchester Test, with Jurel taking up wicketkeeping duties. However, India's latest training session will give Indian fans a lot of relief as Pant has started practising wicketkeeping drills. While the drills were pretty basic, it is a good sign that the Indian vice-captain has started wicketkeeping as it indicates that he is in the final stage of his recovery.
Times of India journalist Sahil Malhotra posted a video on 'X', showing Pant donning the wicketkeeping gloves while at practice. He noted that the Delhi cricketer had his injured finger heavily taped but looked good while performing the drills.
