Indian cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar presented a cap and shirt to Test captain Shubman Gill in recognition of his outstanding performance in the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Gill was in sublime form with the bat in his debut series as captain and fell just 20 runs short of breaking Gavaskar’s long-standing record for the most runs by an Indian in a Test series.
Gavaskar, known for his thoughtful gestures toward young players, once again made a memorable moment with this heartfelt tribute. Gill’s batting heroics included a double century in the first innings and a century in the second at Edgbaston, leading India to a historic victory.
“Well done! I’ve got a gift for you in anticipation of you going past (the record of most runs by an Indian batter in a Test series)… but at least you have something to aim for in the next series, yeah? This is just a little gift… a shirt with my ‘SG’ initials. Someone made it for me, but I’m giving it to you. I don’t know if it will fit you or not,” Gavaskar told Gill after Day 3’s play.
“This is a little cap, which I give to very few people, with my signature. All the best, God bless—and that last move was fantastic, setting a fielder there and bowling a yorker,” he added.

Stat: Shubman Gill now has most series runs by India captain
Gill finished the series with an impressive 754 runs in 10 innings across five Tests, including four centuries and a highest score of 269. Despite his remarkable effort, he narrowly missed breaking Gavaskar’s record for the most runs by an Indian in a Test series, 774 runs in just eight innings during the 1970–71 tour of the West Indies.
India trailed 2-1 heading into the final Test. They need nine wickets to win the match and level the series 2-2. Meanwhile, the home team requires 324 more runs to seal a commanding 3-1 series victory.
