Ruturaj Gaikwad’s much-awaited international return lasted just 14 balls, courtesy of a one-handed stunner from Dewald Brevis in the first ODI between India and South Africa in Ranchi. While India dominated large phases of the innings through Virat Kohli’s and Rohit Sharma’s knocks, Gaikwad’s dismissal gave South Africa a much-needed breakthrough.

India entered the opening ODI hoping for a solid start after losing all three tosses on the tour. Sent in to bat first, India rode on fluent contributions from the experienced pair of Rohit and Virat. But amid the flow of runs, Brevis' brilliance denied Gaikwad's comeback.

In the 27th over, Ottneil Baartman delivered a good-length ball just outside off. Gaikwad leaned into a drive on the rise, expecting it to race past the backward point. But Brevis, standing close inside the circle, reacted in no-time. He dived full stretch to his right and plucked a one-handed stunner inches from the turf as Gaikwad walked back for 8 off 14, ending the third-wicket stand with Kohli at 22 runs.

Rohit Shama etches major milestone into the record books

Rohit breaks Shahid Afridi’s world record

Before Gaikwad’s fall, India were cruising thanks to a vintage partnership between Rohit and Virat. Rohit, after getting a life on 1, went on to smash 57 off 51. In doing so, he broke Shahid Afridi’s world record for most ODI sixes, moving to 352 career maximums.

Kohli was in sublime touch from the beginning of his innings. Together, Rohit and Kohli added 136 runs, putting the hosts in the driving seat. After Rohit’s dismissal, trapped lbw by Marco Jansen, the Men in Blue lost three wickets in quick succession in the form of Gaikwad and Washington Sundar. Batting at No. 5 for the first time, Sundat scored 13 off 19 before lofting Bosch to mid-off. By the end of 40 overs, Kohli's score read 132 off 112 balls*, and he shared the crease with the stand-in skipper. KL Rahul (19* off 28) as India reached 264/4.
