The ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 has left no stone unturned in entertaining fans in the ongoing week as cricket lovers have been treated with several memorable moments in the past few days. During Match 16 of the tournament being played between New Zealand and Afghanistan on Wednesday, October 18 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, fans got to witness another sensational moment in the field as Mitchell Santner took a breathtaking catch in the second innings.

The incident took place in the 14th over of the innings as Lockie Ferguson bowled a short delivery to Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi. The southpaw pulled the delivery in the air which was going towards square leg. Santner, who was inside the 30-yard circle, ran backwards to grab hold of the ball. The left-arm spinner jumped to his full height and put in a full stretched dive to complete a breathtaking one-handed catch.

The incredible effort even left former England cricketer turned commentator, Michael Atherton, stunned who was full of praise for the Kiwi fielder.

Courtesy of Santner’s sensational effort, Afghanistan were left reeling at 43/3 after 14 overs chasing 289 for victory. After three early wickets, Rahmat Shah (36 off 62) and Azmatullah Omarzai (27 off 32) tried to dig deep but failed to convert their starts into a big score. As a result, Afghanistan succumbed under scoreboard pressure and were bundled out for 139 losing the match by 149 runs.

Mitchell Santner also starred with the ball for New Zealand

Mitchell Santner (3/39, 7.4 overs) and Lockie Ferguson (3/19, 7 overs) picked three wickets each for New Zealand while Trent Boult (2/18, 7 overs) also picked two wickets.Earlier in the day, after being put in to bat first, New Zealand were left reeling at 110/4 after 21.4 overs.

Seeing their side in trouble, Captain Tom Latham (68 off 74) and Glenn Phillips (71 off 80) got involved involved in a 144-run stand for the fifth wicket to help their side post 288/6 in their allotted 50 overs. Naveen-ul-Haq (2/48, 8 overs) and Azmatullah Omarzai (2/56, 7 overs) picked two wickets each for Afghanistan.
