One of the most bizarre run outs unfolded in the sixth match of the Maharashtra Premier League 2025 between Raigad Royals and Puneri Bappa at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune as Suraj Shinde, Puneri's wicketkeeper, threw the ball, which hit the stumps on both striker's and non-striker's ends.
Royals were chasing against Puneri when Ramakrishna Ghosh bowled an outswinger to Siddhesh Veer, who tried to guide it towards fine leg. However, he missed the shot as the ball went behind the stumps. Shinde quickly collected it and observed what transpired.
Veer called Harsh Mogaveera for a run but after observing Shinde taking control of the ball, he signalled his partner to return and retreated to the crease himself. While Veer was able to make his ground before the ball hit the stumps, his batting partner was outside his crease at the non-striker end. Notably, Shinde's throw hit the stumps at the striker's end and then deflected to hit non-striker's end as well.

What MCC's law states about such run outs?
Mogaveera did not expect the ball to travel towards his end and had no time to react when the ball hit the stumps at his end, leading to a bizarre and rare dismissal which came out of nowhere and surprised everyone.
However, it is not the first instance of such a dismissal. In one of the matches in Bangladesh Premier League 2022, Andre Russell became a victim of such dismissal, where the ball deflected after its contact with the stumps at the striker's end before going onto hit the stumps at the non-striker's end.
As per MCC's Law 38.4, the batter to get dismissed in such an instance would be the one at whose end the wicket is broken. Hence, Mogaveera had to pay the price for his lack of game awareness.
