Indian Test captain Shubman Gill brought back nostalgia with his fiery huddle talk at Headingley, Leeds, ahead of England’s first innings. His words reminded fans of the legendary huddle speech delivered by former captain Virat Kohli at Lord’s in 2021.

Kohli had famously said, ‘For 60 overs, they should feel like hell out there’. Gill’s message and eyes carried a similar intensity which apparently deeply resonated with the team and set the tone for the innings.

England had won the toss and opted to bowl first on Day 1. India got off to a solid start, with openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul putting together a 91-run partnership. Jaiswal impressed everyone with a fluent century, scoring 101 off 159 balls before being dismissed by England skipper Ben Stokes.

Sai Sudharsan’s dismissal brought Gill to the crease, and he continued the momentum by building a 129-run partnership for the third wicket with Jaiswal and a massive 209-run stand with Rishabh Pant. Gill’s composed innings of 147 off 227 balls was a terrific knock, while Pant played his natural game, scoring 134 from 178 deliveries.

Despite their stronghold on Day 1, India suffered a collapse on the morning of Day 2, losing seven wickets for just 41 runs. Stokes and Josh Tongue were instrumental in England’s fightback, both claiming four wickets each.

India ended their first innings with a total of 471. The match at Headingley saw three Indian centurions, Jaiswal, Gill, and Pant which also replicated the iconic 2002 performance at the same venue, where Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and Rahul Dravid had also scored centuries.
