India’s historic triumph in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final witnessed the Indian team clinching a commanding victory over New Zealand. However, one brief on-field incident between Arshdeep Singh and Daryl Mitchell caught the attention. The star pacer later apologised to Mitchell both during and after the match, ensuring the heated moment ended on a respectful note.

India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to lift their third T20 World Cup title and become the first team to successfully defend the trophy. In front of more than 86,000 fans, India delivered a dominant performance with both bat and ball. However, during New Zealand’s chase, tensions briefly flared in the middle when Arshdeep and Mitchell were involved in a heated exchange.

The incident took place in the 11th over of New Zealand’s innings. Mitchell had earlier hit Arshdeep for two consecutive sixes, putting the bowler under pressure. On the fifth delivery of the over, Mitchell played the ball straight back towards the bowler. In his follow-through, Arshdeep collected the ball and attempted a quick throw at the stumps at the striker’s end. However, the throw missed the target and struck Mitchell on the thigh.

The unexpected hit left Mitchell visibly frustrated. The New Zealand batter immediately reacted and walked towards the bowler, expressing his anger through animated gestures. For a few seconds, the atmosphere in the middle grew tense as both players exchanged words.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav quickly stepped in to calm the situation. He approached Mitchell and attempted to diffuse the tension, while the on-field umpire also had a word with Arshdeep. The intervention helped prevent the situation from escalating further. After completing the over, Arshdeep walked up to Mitchell and apologised for the incident. The two players shook hands and shared a brief side hug, putting an end to the heated exchange.

Arshdeep later revealed that the hit was completely unintentional. Speaking after the match, he explained that the ball unexpectedly swung in the air when he threw it towards the stumps. He also confirmed that he immediately went to Mitchell to say sorry once the over ended. Meanwhile, after the match concluded and India celebrated their historic victory, Arshdeep again approached Mitchell and apologised for the moment.

The brief confrontation did little to affect India’s dominance in the final. Earlier in the match, India had posted a total of 255/5, thanks to explosive knocks from Sanju Samson (89), Abhishek Sharma (52), and Ishan Kishan (54). In the end, New Zealand were bowled out for 159, sealing a comprehensive 96-run victory for India. The win marked India’s third T20 World Cup title after their previous triumphs in 2007 and 2024.
