India’s victorious campaign in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 ended with memorable scenes not only during the match but also in the post-match celebrations at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Among the many viral moments from the night was former India captain Rohit Sharma raising the hand of Jay Shah, the chairman of the International Cricket Council, in front of the jubilant crowd after India sealed their third T20 World Cup title.
The moment was captured during the celebration after India outclassed New Zealand by a massive 96 runs in the final on March 8. Following the victory lap, the Indian team walked around the stadium to acknowledge the roaring supporters. During the celebrations, Rohit and Shah were seen walking together behind the Indian players along the boundary rope. In a light-hearted moment that quickly went viral on social media, Rohit grabbed Shah’s hand and raised it toward the crowd, playfully gesturing as if presenting him to the fans.

Rohit, who served as the ICC Brand Ambassador for the tournament, had already been part of the pre-match ceremony earlier in the evening. Before the start of the final, he walked out with former India captain MS Dhoni to present the T20 World Cup trophy. In the match, India produced a sensational batting display after New Zealand opted to bowl first. The hosts scored 255/5 in their 20 overs, setting a record total in a T20 World Cup final.
Half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan powered India to the massive total. Abhishek gave the team a blistering start, smashing 52 off just 21 balls as India raced to 92 runs in the powerplay. Samson continued his remarkable form in the tournament with an 89 off 46 deliveries, marking his third consecutive half-century. Kishan also chipped in with a fifty to keep the momentum going. Although Jimmy Neesham briefly pulled things back for New Zealand with three wickets in the 16th over, a final over finish from Shivam Dube helped India go past the 250-run mark.

Chasing a target of 256, the BlackCaps struggled to keep up with the required run rate. India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah picked up four wickets to dismantle the Kiwi batting line-up and was named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance. Axar Patel also played a crucial role, claiming three wickets as New Zealand were bowled out for 159 in 19 overs.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav praised his teammates after the win, stating the impact of Samson, Abhishek, and Bumrah. Samson was later named Player of the Tournament after scoring more than 300 runs, including three successive fifties. With the emphatic victory, India lifted their third men’s T20 World Cup title and became the most successful team in the tournament’s history.
