17-year-old Farhan Ahmed registered his name in Nottinghamshire’s history books by becoming the first player to pick a hat-trick for the county in T20 cricket. The young off-spinner’s exceptional spell of 5 for 25 handed Nottinghamshire a thrilling four-wicket win over Lancashire in the recent Blast game at Trent Bridge.

Farhan, the younger brother of England’s Rehan Ahmed, had already made headlines with record-breaking red-ball performances, including becoming the youngest first-class cricketer for Nottinghamshire and later, the youngest in Britain to take 10 wickets in a match.

Lancashire, having already secured a place in the quarter-finals, entered this final group-stage match with comparatively less pressure. On the other hand, Nottinghamshire were playing for pride, with slim chances of qualification due to a poor net run rate.

Opting to bat first, Lancashire got off to a promising start, with Phil Salt and Keaton Jennings adding 38 runs. Liam Patterson-White broke the opening stand, and Farhan later went on to exploit the turning surface at Trent Bridge.

He picked up the wicket of Chris Green and returned in the final over to produce a magical hat-trick. On the fourth delivery of the 20th over, he dismissed Luke Wood, followed it up with Tom Aspinwall, and then bowled Mitchell Stanley to complete his hat-trick, the first ever for Nottinghamshire in T20s. His figures of 5-25 from five overs resulted in Lancashire bundling out for 126.

Nottinghamshire’s chase began in the worst possible manner as they lost four wickets within three overs, thanks to England spinner Tom Hartley. However, Tom Moores acted as the crisis manager. Moores, who has been in red-hot form this season, played a brilliant knock, scoring 75 off just 42 balls.

His innings included an important 81-run partnership with Lyndon James (20), which pulled Notts back into the contest. Though James fell with 32 needed off 50 balls, Moores and Daniel Sams guided the team home with ease. Moores was eventually run out with the scores level, but the team managed to seal the victory in the next ball and register a four-wicket win.
