During the recent South Group match between Somerset and Essex in the Vitality T20 Blast 2025, Australian pacer Riley Meredith split a stump in half, leading Somerset to a 95-run win over Essex at Taunton.
The incident took place during Essex’s chase of Somerset’s 225/6. In the third over, he produced a fiery yorker to opener Michael Pepper, that not only beat the batter but crashed into the off-stump, splitting the stump in two. While one half stayed rooted, the other flew behind the wicket. Meredith was seen sprinting toward the shattered stump and picking it up like a trophy.

Earlier in the evening, Somerset displayed brilliant batting efforts. Tom Kohler-Cadmore smashed 90 off just 39 balls, lacing his knock with eight fours and seven sixes. Meanwhile, Will Smeed (32 off 20) and Sean Dickson (28* off 17) made sure Somerset posted 225/6 in their allotted 20 overs
Essex’s bowlers, including Mohammad Amir and Simon Harmer, were smashed all over the ground by Somerset’s batters. None of the Essex bowlers managed to restrict the flow of runs, with Benkenstein, Walter, and Bennett all going at over 12 runs per over.
Chasing 226, Essex were dismantled by Somerset’s pace battery. Matt Henry (4/21) and Craig Overton (2/32) dismantled the middle and lower order, and Meredith finished with figures of 2/22.
Despite a late cameo from young Noah Thain (38 off 17), Essex were bundled out for 130 all out in just 14.1 overs. The result not only secured a win for Somerset but also took them into the quarterfinals of the competition. With this performance, Meredith extended his lead as the joint-highest wicket-taker of the 2025 Vitality Blast, taking his tally to 24.
