Mumbai Indians' (MI) head coach Mahela Jayawardene opened up about the mistakes made by the team against the Gujarat Titans (GT), which affected their performance in the previous match. It was an important match for both teams, who were on 14 points each. However, the game turned out in GT's favour as Rahul Tewatia and Gerald Coetzee chased down 15 runs in the last over.
The game was rain-interrupted, and hence the overs were reduced to 19. While GT were behind the par score when the match stopped mid-way, they came back and chased the given target (147 runs). It was a thrilling game of cricket for the fans as well.
During the post-match press conference, Mahela Jayawardene mentioned that the batters did not play well, which is the main reason why the target was less in the first place. They did start well, but could not convert it in the last eight overs.
"Both teams made quite a few mistakes all day in the middle and we probably made more than they did. I think that's the difference. I think we didn't play our best, especially with the bat. I thought we were set up nicely initially, and then we just had to bat those last eight overs, which we didn't bat smartly," said Mahela Jayawardene at the post-match press conference.
As per the head coach, MI were almost 30 runs short on the pitch, which didn't give the bowlers much to defend. Moreover, the management and the players are well aware of the pressure they'll face in the upcoming matches as the road to the playoffs wouldn't be easy for them.
"We're probably 30 runs short on that wicket. The guys bowled really well and created a lot of opportunities. So, I think that's a good sign and we treat every game as a playoff game from here on. I'm very proud of the boys today, the way they fought back from that situation," added Jayawardene.
