West Indies announced a 15-man squad for the forthcoming three-match ODI series against Pakistan, which will be played at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad. The Caribbean side will be led by Shai Hope. West Indies will look to avenge their 1-2 defeat against the Men in Green in the recently-concluded three-match T20I series in Lauderhill, Florida.
The experienced Alzarri Joseph has been rested for the three-match series. However, the talented all-rounder, Romario Shepherd, has made a comeback after missing the tour of England in May-June due to his involvement in the rescheduled IPL playoffs, where he helped Royal Challengers Bengaluru win their maiden title.
West Indies head coach Daren Sammy mentioned the importance of the series as the Caribbean unit pushed for automatic qualification in the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Apart from making it to the marquee event, Sammy wants his team to adopt a winning mentality and play as a unit, with an eye on long-term success.
"Pakistan presents a different test and challenge as we continue our push for automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup. While qualifying is our immediate goal, maintaining a winning mentality and team cohesion is essential for long-term success. The upcoming matches against teams like Pakistan, who are ranked higher, provide crucial opportunities to earn valuable ranking points to improve our standing ahead of the World Cup," Sammy was quoted as saying by India Today.
The West Indies were whitewashed 3-0 by England in the United Kingdom in their most recent ODI series. Hope and Co. will want to get back to winning ways in front of their passionate home fans and bring smiles to their faces.
