'Would you say that is your best?' Russel Arnold questions India's batting strength despite comprehensive Galle win

India defeated Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the first Test at Galle International Stadium, securing a commanding victory on the final day. The Indian team posted 462 in their first innings and 193 in their second innings, setting Sri Lanka a target of 372 that the hosts could not chase down. Despite the comprehensive nature of the win, questions have been raised about the quality of India's batting performance across the match.
Russel Arnold, a former Sri Lankan cricketer and commentator, offered his assessment of India's batting display. Arnold acknowledged that India reached a strong total but highlighted concerns about the contribution of several key players in the middle order. He examined the performance of the partnership between KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal and the overall batting unit in detail.
"When you look at the batting, other than Padikkal and Rahul, if you took that partnership out, they have not scored a lot. So, would you say that is your best? There are quality players like Gill, Jadeja, Pant, and Jaiswal, even though they did not perform, India got to a good score, and that is a sign of a strong team. But it wouldn't be the best performance, because these players did not perform, did they?" Arnold said while speaking on Sony Sports Network.
Padikkal and Rahul's partnership drove India's first-innings total
Devdutt Padikkal and KL Rahul were the standout performers for India in the first innings. Padikkal scored 167 runs in his maiden Test century, while Rahul contributed 82 runs. The two batsmen put on a 162-run partnership for the second wicket on Day 1, which formed the backbone of India's first-innings total of 462.
Arnold's assessment of India's batting depth
Arnold's observation centred on the fact that the bulk of India's runs came from the Padikkal-Rahul partnership. Once that partnership was broken, the remaining batters did not accumulate significant runs, which raised questions about the depth of the batting performance. Arnold noted that despite the absence of strong contributions from players like Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal, India still managed to post a competitive total.
The second Test of the series begins on August 23 at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, with India leading the series 1-0.
