Delhi Capitals Women's skipper Jemimah Rodrigues has been penalised INR 12.00 lakh for her side maintaining a slow over rate against Gujarat Giants Women in Match 17 of the ongoing Women's Premier League (WPL) 2026 on Tuesday, January 27. The Capitals also faced a narrow three-run defeat at the hands of the Ashleigh Gardner-led side, leading to a double disappointment for Jemimah.
Maintaining a slow over-rate amounts to a breach of the Code of Conduct of the league, as a result of which Jemimah was held guilty for the offence. The WPL released a release on social media on Wednesday, clarifying the same.
“Jemimah Rodrigues, captain of Delhi Capitals has been fined after her team maintained a slow over rate during their team's match against Gujarat Giants at the BCA Stadium, Vadodara on Tuesday. As it was her first offence of the season under the WPL's Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Jemimah was fined INR 12 lakh,” the WPL said in an official statement.
The Capitals were forced to place an extra fielder inside the circle in the 19th and 20th overs of the Giants' innings due to already being behind time. Interestingly, the Gujarat-based side utilised the field restrictions fully, amassing 22 runs off the two overs and pushing themselves to a competitive total of 174/9.
Jemimah & Co. ended up agonisingly short of the target at 171 for the loss of eight wickets in a match which went right down to the wire. The loss also resulted in the Delhi-based franchise slipping to the fourth position at a crucial juncture of the tournament. Their final league phase fixture is against UP Warriorz on February 1, which has also become a do-or-die encounter.

Coming to the enthralling fixture which was played out on Tuesday, Sophie Devine claimed the Player of the Match award for a 10-ball 13-run knock as well as a four-wicket haul (4/37 in four overs). Shree Charani (4/34 in 4 overs) and Niki Prasad (47 off 24) performed well for Delhi. However, their efforts could not quite ensure the all-important two points.
Not only will Jemimah's women have to win their clash against the Warriorz, but they will also have to hope for the Mumbai Indians to lose their upcoming fixture against the Gujarat Giants. There is a big possibility that the three-time runners-up might not make it to the knockout phase this time around, since they need a lot of luck to play with.
