Mumbai Indians Women locked horns with UP Warriorz Women in match No. 8 of the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2026 at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai on Thursday, January 15.

Up Warriorz won the toss and opted to bowl first. Mumbai got off to a sedate start as G Kamalini and Amanjot Kaur added 43 runs inside eight overs. However, both of them departed in quick succession. Harmanpreet Kaur looked good but departed for an 11-ball 16.

Nat Sciver-Brunt and Nicola Carey joined forces in the 13th over and played some breathtaking strokes during a crucial 85-run partnership off 43 balls. The England captain was dismissed for a 43-ball 65, while Carey batted till the end to finish unbeaten on 32 off 20 deliveries. Mumbai Indians finished at 161/5 in their 20 overs.

In reply, Kiran Navgire and Meg Lanning added 42 runs in the powerplay. However, Nat Sciver-Brunt dismissed them in the same over. Harleen Deol walked out to bat at No. 4 and played a gem of an innings. She was the aggressor in the 73-run stand with Phoebe Litchfield. After the Australian batter departed for a 22-ball 25, Chloe Tryon joined Deol and belted an unbeaten 27 off 11 balls.

However, the star of the show was Deol with her 39-ball 64. The Warriorz defeated the defending champions by seven wickets, racing to the target in 18.1 overs.

The right-handed batter was retired out in the last match, a move that garnered criticism from some fans. She was batting at a different level altogether, hitting boundaries at will. In her beaten knock of 64 off 39 balls, she smashed 12 fours.

Top bowling performance of the match — Shikha Pandey

Shikha Pandey bowled an economical spell, giving away just 25 runs in four overs. She picked up the wicket of the in-form Sciver-Brunt in the final over. The experienced campaigner bowled some tough overs but didn't allow the batters to take advantage.

Records Broken and Major Milestones Achieved

  • Meg Lanning ended her losing five-match losing streak as captain in the WPL. She is tied with Smriti Mandhana and Beth Mooney for the most consecutive defeats as captain in the league.
  • 162 is the second-highest target chased down in the WPL against Mumbai. The highest remains Delhi's 165 in Vadodara in 2025.
  • Nat Sciver-Brunt joined Harmanpreet and Lanning as batters with most 50-plus scores in the WPL (10).
  • Amanjot Kaur and Gunalan Kamalini became the only opening pair to stitch a 40-plus partnership in the WPL at under a run-a-ball (run rate of 5.86)

Who was the Player of the Match?

Harleen Deol won the Player of the Match, which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. She took the bowlers to the cleaners and batted like it was a net practice and not an important fixture in the WPL. Her hitting through the off-side was delightful to watch.

What is the next match?

Mumbai Indians will square off against UP Warriorz once again on Saturday, January 17, at the same venue.
