Ashleigh Barty became the new number one ranked player in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) singles rankings following her victory in the Birmingham Classic on Sunday. She thus became only the 2nd Australian Women to top the WTA singles rankings. Goolagong Cawley had achieved the feat for a couple of weeks in 1976. Barty won the French Open singles title a couple of days ago which was her maiden grand slam title. The former Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) player has credited her stint as a cricketer for this success of late.

Barty took a break from Tennis in late 2014 and met the Australian Women’s team players. A conversation helped her take up cricket at that point. She impressed Andy Richards of Queensland Fire team who was going to be the coach of WBBL team Brisbane Heat. Barty eventually signed up for the Brisbane franchise for the inaugural WBBL edition in 2015-16. She returned to Tennis after the completion of the season.

Ashleigh Barty might be a Tennis star who played cricket but there are a lot of cricketers who featured in other sports. Among star Women cricketers, Suzie Bates and Ellyse Perry represented their countries in Basketball and Football respectively. They had to give up those careers to be in the longer term in cricket. There are a lot of Men’s cricketers with dual representation in Sports. One of the big examples was Jonty Rhodes of South Africa.

Jonty, who introduced a new dimension to fielding on the cricket field, was a part of South African International Hockey sides. AB de Villiers, another South African was deemed to be decent at other sports as well. Kenya did surprise everyone by making it to the 2003 World Cup semi-final. Not many knew that there was a David Cup player in that team.
