UAE picked up their first win in the ongoing Women’s Asia Cup 2022 as they defeated Malaysia by seven wickets in the ninth game at the Sylhet International Stadium. With the win, UAE are currently at the fifth position on the points table with two points from three games.

Earlier in the game, Malaysia opted to bat first after winning the toss and the bowling pair of Chaya Mughal and Mahika Gaur went through a good bowling spell upfront. Winifred Duraisingham and Wan Julia took their time initially to see off the new ball. Esha Oza picked up the first scalp in the eighth over after an opening partnership of 40 runs while Mas Elysa joined the skipper at the crease.

Elysa could not find the boundaries and was dismissed after a 27-ball 14 while Duraisingham was determined to stay long despite the runs coming slow. After a 53-ball 33, Vaishnave Mahesh cleaned up Duraisingham in the 17th over and Malaysia added just 13 runs to the overall tally after that to end up with 88 for 4 in their 20 overs.

Theertha Satish and Chayal Mughal string crucial partnership

In reply, UAE suffered an early blow as Esha was dismissed for just five runs in the third over. Khushi Sharma followed her soon for just one run and it was up to the pair of Theertha Satish and Chaya Mughal to build a partnership. The duo battled through the tough phase and started to find the gaps once it got its eye in. Satish, in particular, looked in good touch and found the boundaries regularly.

Mughal was dismissed after a 34-ball 17, however, the damage was already done and Satish’s unbeaten 62 off 60 balls comprising eight boundaries helped UAE to chase down the score comfortably with five balls to spare. Satish’s unbeaten half-century earned her the Player of the Match award. UAE will clash with Thailand in their next fixture on Friday, October 7.
