In a new development, Cricket South Africa (CSA) and local broadcaster SuperSport on April 29 (Friday) signed an agreement to start a new T20 tournament in the country, which is slated to start in January. It is to be noted that the competition will have a total of six franchises.

As per the details, the major decisions regarding the process of player rostering and salary heads are yet to be decided. However, an auction will soon be conducted for the franchises to make their squads. The inaugural edition of the tournament will start just after the Proteas complete their tour of Australia slated to take place later this year. A total of 33 matches will be played in a double round-robin league format followed by the semi-final and final including three teams.

We are excited by the formation of something this fresh and invigorating: CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki

“We are excited by the formation of something this fresh and invigorating, which also offers the opportunity for private investment into the franchises. CSA has already received interest from several potential local and international investors,” CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

“The parties have invested significant sums of money into the joint venture. Governance and commercial sustainability are priorities for the board of this new entity. All successful leagues are underpinned by strong domestic TV rights deals, which have been secured for this property,” CSA said in a press statement.

The new tournament is another try from the CSA board to start afresh franchise-based T20 tournament in the country. Earlier, CSA organized Mzansi Super League and it was conducted for two years till 2019. However, the board decided that the tournament structure had to be changed and it was stopped.

Meanwhile, the CEO of SuperSport Marc Jury said that she and her team are delighted to invest in a product that will change the face of South African cricket. She also emphasized the fact that there is an early-year gap in the calendar, so the timing will be ideal as well.
