A blistering 83-run knock from Venkatesh Iyer, followed by Rinku Singh hitting 30 runs in the final over helped KKR pull-off an unbelievable chase against the defending champions in match number 13 of the Indian Premier League 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Winning the game, KKR handed GT their first loss of the season.
Speaking about the game, Rashid Khan-led GT won the toss and opted to field first. The openers got off to a brisk start inside the first four overs scoring 33 runs. Sunil Narine, drew the first blood for KKR as Saha departed after a cameo of a run-a-ball 17. Sai Sudharsan then joined hands with Shubman Gill as the duo added 67 runs for second wicket. When the partnership started to mount pressure on KKR, Narine broke the partnership by dismissing Gill.
However, Sai Sudharsan kept the scoreboard ticking by registering his second consecutive fifty of the tournament and was ably supported by his Tamil Nadu mate Vijay Shankar. Shankar and Sudharsan added 35 runs for the fourth wicket. Once the set Sai Sudharsan got out, Shankar took charge of the game as he went bonkers against KKR’s bowlers in the death over, smashing 45 runs in last two overs to help GT post their highest ever total of 204/4 in IPL history. Shankar amassed a 24-ball 63* that included nine boundaries.
In response to 204, the openers did not live-up to the expectations as they got out inside four overs, leaving KKR unsettled at 28/2. Venkatesh Iyer, who came in as an impact player along with skipper Nitish Rana led the recovery, as the duo added 100 runs for the third wicket to bring KKR back into the contest. Venkatesh Iyer finsihed his half-century in a grand fashion. Alzarri Joseph broke the good-going partnership by picking up Rana. Soon, Venkatesh Iyer departed for a well-made 40-ball 83.
GT's stand-in skipper Rashid Khan, who had a bad game with the ball in his first three overs, delivered for their team when it was needed the most by picking a hat-trick against the likes of KKR all-rounders in Andre Russel, Sunil Narine and Shardul Thakur. Rinku Singh then played an exquisite innings, taking Dayal to the cleaners as he scored 30 runs in the final over to help KKR finish an unbelievable run-chase.
