Tom Latham registered his career-best score of 145* while skipper Kane Williamson smashed an unbeaten 94 as New Zealand chased down a target of 307 to thump India by a seven-wicket margin in the first of the three-match ODI series in Auckland. The Kiwi duo put on a massive 221* run partnership for the fourth wicket as they reached the target comfortably with 17 balls to spare.

Speaking about how the opening fixture went by, Williamson won the toss and opted to field first. Indian openers Shubman Gill and captain Shikhar Dhawan struck their respective half-centuries with the pair adding 124 for the opening wicket. The former got dismissed for 50 while Dhawan got out for 72.

Shreyas Iyer’s solid run in the ODI format continued as he slammed 80 off 76 with four fours and as many maximums. Failing to get a chance in T20Is, Sanju Samson scored 36 off 38 while blitz innings from Washinton Sundar, who hit 37 off just 16 helped the Indians to post 306/7 on the board. Tim Southee, who achieved his personal milestone of 200 ODI wickets in the innings, took three wickets with Lockie Ferguson also snaring as many scalps.

In reply, Kiwi openers Finn Allen and Devon Conway amassed 22 and 24 respectively with Daryl Mitchell scoring just 11. At 88/3, the Kiwis looked in a spot of bother but Latham and Kane then joined hands to stitch a massive match-winning partnership for the home side. Apart from Sundar, the other four Indian bowlers gave away over 60 runs each as the Kiwis raced away to their target. For his splendid century that took the game away from the visitors, Tom Latham grabbed the Player of the Match award.
