All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was the stand-out performer for his knock of 82 not out off 65 balls. This included 12 fours and two maximums and also a solid spell of 2/51 as Bangladesh (BAN) defeated Sri Lanka (SL) by a margin of three wickets with 53 balls remaining in Match No. 38 of the ongoing edition of the ODI Cricket World Cup in Delhi. With this Bangladesh got their first win against Sri Lanka in the ODI World Cup.

Bangladesh won the toss and elected to field first. Sri Lanka got off to a shaky start, losing Kusal Perera early for just four runs. However, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis steadied the innings with a solid 61-run partnership. Unfortunately, both batters fell in quick succession, leaving Sri Lanka at 72 for 3. Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka then came together to rebuild the Sri Lankan innings.

They put on a crucial 63-run partnership, bringing Sri Lanka back into the game. Samarawickrama was eventually dismissed by Shakib Al Hasan, but Asalanka continued to bat and reached a fine century (108 off 105) with his knock including six fours and five sixes. Dhananjaya de Silva (34) and Maheesh Theekshana (22) also made valuable contributions, but Sri Lanka lost wickets in the regular intervals and were eventually bowled out for 279 in 50 overs. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Sri Lanka managed to post a competitive total on the board

Bangladesh faced an early setback in their pursuit of 280, losing Tanzid Hasan (9) and Litton Das (23) cheaply. However, Shakib Al Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto forged a remarkable 169-run partnership to revive the chase. Shakib anchored the innings with a brilliant 82 runs off 65 deliveries, including 12 boundaries and two maximums. He was eventually dismissed by Angelo Mathews. Shanto played a crucial role as well, contributing 90 runs before Mathews dismissed him.

Mahmudullah (22) and Towhid Hridoy (15) made valuable contributions as Bangladesh successfully chased down the target with 53 balls remaining. Shakib Al Hasan was deservedly awarded the Player of the Match award for his all-round performance, which included a stellar 82 runs with the bat and impressive figures of 2 for 57 with the ball
