Rohit Sharma and Virender Sehwag are two of the most influential top-order batters in the history of India's ODI cricket. Both Rohit and Sehwag were naturally aggressive cricketers with the knack of going after the bowling. Their unique abilities with the bat brought them immense success, however, they have also had their fair share of differences while batting.
Rohit and Sehwag started off their ODI career in different eras. Sehwag broke into the side in 1999 in a team that had Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid who had already become established players of the setup. On the other hand, Rohit who began in 2007, had the same cricketers but at the business end of their careers. He also had a host of cricketers coming through age-group cricket who were trying to establish themselves in the national setup.
As mentioned above, both of them followed a similar template of going all out against bowlers. However, there was a slight difference in that too. Sehwag had an ideology of smashing his way through right from the outset. This would make him one of the toughest batters to bowl to during the powerplay. Meanwhile, Rohit would also attack, but in a more measured way. When set, he has the capability of tearing through the opposition attack.
They also had different go-to shots. Sehwag was a master of the square cut and flick through the midwicket region. As far as Rohit is concerned, there is arguably no better players of the pull shot off short and pacey deliveries. Rohit also prefers to take the inside-out approach to pace bowlers, a shot which has only gotten better over time.
