On Friday, September 13, speculations were rife that MS Dhoni, the former Indian skipper, will eventually call it a day from the highest level. Rumours did the rounds that he would be holding a press conference where he would bid adieu to the game of cricket. The fact that Virat Kohli, the Indian captain, posted a picture, giving a tribute to Dhoni, made people speculate more.
In his post, Virat reminisced a game alongside Dhoni, which he could never forget. However, later it was learned that Dhoni was neither holding any press conference, nor he was hanging his boots. After the 2019 edition of the World Cup in England and Wales, it was presumed that the 38-year-old would be calling it quits, but there hasn’t been any concrete news of his plans in the sport.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is also not aware of Dhoni’s thoughts about his future. But after the mega event, it was communicated that the Jharkhand-born won’t be India’s number one keeper with Rishabh Pant being groomed for the future. Rather, Dhoni would be a part of the transition process with India scheduled to play the 2020 T20 World Cup in Australia.
After the latest talks about Dhoni’s retirement, Sakshi Dhoni, MSD’s wife, took to her Instagram story and wrote, “It’s called rumours.” It officially put an end to speculations. Dhoni is currently on a sabbatical and he wasn’t a part of the T20I and ODI series in the West Indies. In fact, the veteran hasn’t been picked for the three-match T20I series versus South Africa as well.
Not Today
In the meantime, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for whom Dhoni has played 10 seasons, used a popular quote from the television series “Game of Thrones”. The keeper has won three champions for CSK and took the franchise to the playoffs every other time since the inception of the IPL.
CSK didn’t mention anything about the retirement talks, but the indication was pretty clear. They used the popular dialogue “Not today”, which Anya Stark was taught by her instructor while speaking to the God of Death. CSK also used Dhoni’s jersey number seven in their post.
