At 34, many would question how much cricket Dale Steyn has left in him. In fact, following the nasty injury he suffered against the Indians in the first Test match of the Test series in Cape Town, many began calling for his retirement. In an interview a few weeks back, the fiery South African pacer also went ahead and stated that if he wanted to continue playing cricket, he had little option but to drop his pace to do so.

However, recently, he made his limited-overs’ comeback when playing for Hampshire against Somerset in the Royal London One-Day Cup, a county tournament played in England. However, his comeback was not as fiery as one would have anticipated after the 34-year old conceded a massive 80 runs in his quota of 10 overs while picking up the solitary wicket as he did.

This is Steyn’s first bowling spell since sustaining the heel injury against the Indians. He was expected to make a return in the grand scheme of things for the ODI series, but failed a fitness test, something that prevented him from making a comeback.

An undesirable comeback

Hampshire batted first and amassed am impressive 356 in the first innings. However, with favorable batting conditions for the batsmen, it was clear that the total was a rather modest one as Somerset eventually went ahead and pulled-off an unlikely victory. The win was eventually secured in the final over of the match.

Steyn was greeted with two dropped catches during his spell, something that certainly ceased to help. In addition to this, he was slammed for a whopping 18 runs in his very second over. However, he was greeted with a hint of joy when he picked up the wicket of Roelof van der Merwe.
