Deepti Sharma to play for Bengal in the upcoming domestic season

20-year-old all-rounder Deepti Sharma, who was an integral cog of the Indian team that finished runners-up at the ICC Women’s World Cup, will head to Bengal for the upcoming domestic season. Deepti flew to Kolkata from Bengaluru after the conclusion of the India camp and signed on the dotted line. Bengal will feature in the Plate division for the one-dayers this season but will play in the Elite division for the T20 competition.

The youngster also met with former India captain and the current Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Sourav Ganguly. CAB joint secretary Avishek Dalmiya handed over the Bengal jersey and cap to her. Prior to the signing, the left-handed batswoman was in talks with Baroda and Railways after she got the NOC from Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association. Now, she will be joining the Bengal squad alongside mentor Jhulan Goswami.

An upbeat Deepti was quoted as saying by mid-day, “I am really glad to join Bengal. It will help me to improve my game. I am happy that I will be spending this domestic season Jhulan di and there are other senior selectors here. It will be a good challenge for me and I hope to be groomed by them.”

The UP-based cricketer also chipped in with two half-centuries, effective run-outs and back-pedalling catches, a testament to her potential as a world class all-rounder in the making.

Mithali Raj led the Indian eves to the final of the championship before being eclipsed by hosts England in the summit clash at Lord’s. Dubbed as the dark horses in the tournament, the journey of the Indian Women in the quadrennial event was truly remarkable.
