Regarded as one of best captains the country’s ever witnessed, MS Dhoni has time and again done justice to his role even after relinquishing control. The Jharkhand-born cricketer is a smart reader of the game and has used his knowledge and experience to help India win matches even though he may no longer be the official captain. And the Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar believes there is immense respect between Virat Kohli and Dhoni and being behind the wicket allows MSD to take some important calls.

Virat is well known for his audacious approach and his ambitions were vibrant long before he was elected captain. What needs to be understood is that he is comparatively new to ODI captaincy and the 28-year-old has been often witnessed consulting the experienced Dhoni before making some changes. More often than not, Kohli trusts his captain in his decision-making.

Dhoni and Kohli strive on a symbiotic relationship

“I think the wicketkeeper is always in the best position. He knows the pace of the wicket, how much turn is happening so he will be able to guide the captain (Kohli) who is standing a little away,” Gavaskar said speaking to NDTV.

“I think with Dhoni being a successful captain for India, gives Virat the confidence to let him have his way and speak to the bowlers or just make those small adjustments on the field. Virat realizes MS Dhoni is looking to win matches for India,” he added.

Virat Kohli, who succeeded the keeper-skipper, looks to be cruising currently with the momentum the team gained under the tutelage of Dhoni. However, Kohli has always looked up to his former captain for assistance. It is very vivid as MSD makes field changes during the game without any hindrance from his captain, as was reflected against Australia in the first ODI on Sunday too.

This just goes on to show the wonderful relation between two skippers and the symbiotic relationship which in turn is benefiting the Indian cricket.
