In what has been a shocking revelation, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made the decision to deploy the infamous Decision Review System in the upcoming series against England. While the rest of the cricket boards have embraced the DRS system, the BCCI has been the only board in the world that has gone against the system and the use of technology.

However, with the England tour right around the corner, the board has decided that it be best to include the DRS technology on a ‘trial basis’ in a bid to evaluate the improvements made by the system. In spite of the fact that the Indians have not used the technology, it has been witnessed in many other series that the DRS has indeed been quite successful.

The 2011 World Cup saw the Indians allow the Decision Review System be a part of the tournament which was held in the subcontinent. Against England in Bangalore, a few inaccuracies in the system were well-documented as the match eventually went ahead and concluded in a tie. This made the Indians question the use of technology that was not 100% in place.

However, since then, a lot of money has been invested by the International Cricket Council (ICC) as well as many stakeholders affiliated with the board who have made the technology a fool-proof system that is currently being deployed in series across different continents as well.

As far as the BCCI and Indian cricket is concerned, this is a massive step taken to make the DRS much better as well as used in more parts with minimal inaccuracies.

“We are happy to note that Hawkeye has institutionalised all the recommendations made by BCCI, and we confirm that this improved version of DRS will be used on a trial basis during the forthcoming series against England,” the BCCI president Anurag Thakur said. “Based on the performance of the system and the feedback that we will receive, further continuation in forthcoming series will be decided. We recognise the enhanced role of technology in sport, and BCCI will lead such initiatives in coming days, and enrich the viewer experience.”
