The first T20I between England and India at the Old Trafford in Manchester was won by the Men in Blue by a comprehensive eight wickets. Apart from the riveting cricket on the pitch, there were also a few moments when the opponents’ players engaged in some heated exchange of words with each other. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and David Willey were seen in an altercation in the dying stages of the Indian innings.

Bhuvneshwar didn’t complete his run up when the batsman winded up for playing a stroke. The action agitated Willey after which they got involved in a confrontation with each other. Prior to that even Chinaman Kuldeep Yadav resorted to a similar method in the 10th over when he aborted his run-up midway with what seemed to be a ‘Mankading’ warning to the non-striker.

Recently, Willey opened up on the incident and slammed both Bhuvneshwar and Kuldeep for their weird antics on the pitch. The Northampton-born cricketer also mentioned that he wouldn’t have resorted to such methods.

“I don’t think I’d do that”- Willey

“I think he [Bhuvneshwar] was looking to see what I was going to do. They did that a few times. The spinners did it a couple of times. I’m not sure what the rules are on that. I don’t particularly like it. I don’t think it is necessarily in the spirit of cricket.

It’s not my job to comment on that too much on what they should or shouldn’t be doing. Personally, I don’t think I’d do that. I don’t think it is great,” Willey was quoted as saying by CricBuzz.

“It was something of nothing. I think with all the microphones and cameras people get a bit giddy about this sort of thing. I don’t think they got under our skin particularly. They have a few fiery characters and that is part and parcel of cricket.

It has gone on for years, mostly unnoticed because of the lack of cameras and microphones. There is more attention drawn to it now. There is far less of it now,” the pacer added.

Willey made some useful contributions in the match. He scored 29 runs from 15 balls at a time when Kuldeep Yadav wrecked havoc with his left-arm leg-breaks. His late onslaught took England to 159. He also picked up the useful wicket of Shikhar Dhawan in the very first over of India’s run chase.
