England batsmen Herbert Sutcliffe and Ken Barrington were known for their Test averages as they stand only behind the great Sir Donald Bradman but by quite a margin. They played across different era but were among the best of their times. Sutcliffe played for England between 1924 and 1935 but featured in FC for another decade while Barrington embraced the national team between 1955 and 1968. Interestingly, they were both born on November 24th, with an age difference of 36 years.

On the occasion of the birthday anniversary of Herbert Sutcliffe and Ken Barrington, we look at their cricketing achievements and records:

4 – Ken Barrington completed four of his 20 centuries in Test cricket with the help of a six. These are the 2nd most number of times a player has completed a century with a six in Test cricket. Sachin Tendulkar brought up his century on six occasions with a six.


9 – Number of hundreds Barrington scored away from home before his first home century in Test cricket. These are the most away tons for any player in Test cricket before their first century at home. Sunil Gavaskar’s first century at home was his 9th Test century.


12 – Number of innings Herbert Sutcliffe needed to complete 1000 Test runs. He is the joint quickest to complete the milestone. Sutcliffe is the 3rd fastest (33 innings) to 2000 runs, joint 3rd fastest (52 innings) to 3000 runs and 2nd fastest (68 innings) to 4000 runs in Test cricket.


58.67 – Batting average of Ken Barrington in Test cricket. This is the 2nd highest average among players with 6000 Test runs after Don Bradman’s 99.94 average. Barrington aggregated 6806 runs in the 82 Test matches he played with 20 centuries and 35 fifties.


60.73 – Sutcliffe’s batting average of 60.73 in Test cricket is the 2nd highest behind Don Bradman among the players with over 4000 runs. He scored 4555 runs in 54 Tests with 16 centuries and 23 fifties.


69.18 – Barrington’s average of 69.18 away from home is the 2nd best for anyone in Test cricket with a minimum of 1000 runs. Bradman tops this list as well with an average of 102.84.


151 – Sutcliffe’s 151 centuries in first-class cricket are the joint 5th most by any player. He has a total of 380 scores of fifty and more which is exceeded by only five players. His 17 double centuries in FC cricket are the joint 4th most for any player.


50670 – Sutcliffe’s 50670 runs are the 6th most by any player in first-class cricket. He is one of the seven players with over 50000 FC runs. His 32814 runs in the county championship are also the 5th most in the history of the tournament.
