The second day of the Nottingham Test turned out to be on the bowlers’ side as South Africa gained an upper hand having bowled out the home side England for just 205 after they managed to add only 26 more runs to their overnight total for the remaining 4 wickets. South African ended the day at 75/1 in their 2nd innings with a lead of 205 runs in their hands.

Here we look at all the stats and records created during the day’s play.

3 – Runs aggregated by England openers in the first innings; the fewest by them in a Test innings since bagging ducks vs Pakistan in 2005 at Faisalabad.

9 – Number of ducks for Ben Stokes in Test cricket so far; the most by any player since 2014 in the format. Only Nuwan Pradeep (10) has bagged more ducks than Stokes.

7 – Number of five-wicket hauls for James Anderson at Trent Bridge; the joint 2nd most by any pacer at a venue. Ian Botham has 8 five-fers at Lord’s while Dennis Lillee also picked up 7 five-fers at MCG.

13 – Runs Liam Dawson has scored in this innings. His first run ever since his debut knock of 66* in Chennai against India. Dawson bagged ducks in the next 3 innings he played in Test cricket before this.

18 – Number of five-wicket hauls for James Anderson in Test cricket on England soil; the most by any player in the format. He went past Ian Botham who picked 17 five-fers in England.

40 – Balls Joe Root took to score his fifty in the first innings; the joint fastest in Test cricket for an England captain. Graham Gooch also needed 40 balls for his fifty at Sydney against Australia in 1991.

703 – Wickets James Anderson and Stuart Broad have taken together in Test cricket; the 2nd fast bowling pair to taken 700 wickets. Curtley Ambrose and Courtney Walsh together picked up 762 Test wickets.

2013 – Last time before this game, England added 6 or fewer runs for their last 4 wickets in Tests at home was in 2013 against Australia at Nottingham where they lost 4 wickets for 2 runs. They managed to add only 3 runs during their last year’s Dhaka Test against Bangladesh.
