England extended their total to 514/8 on the 2nd day thanks to a brilliant 243 by their former captain Alastair Cook who was the last man to be dismissed before the home team declared their innings. Cook’s marathon innings lasted 9 hours and 22 minutes after which the West Indies scored 44 for the loss of one wicket. The final session didn’t last long due to rain making an appearance.

Here we look at all the stats and records created during the day’s play.

4 – Number of double centuries Alastair Cook has scored in Test cricket; the joint 2nd most by an England player. Wally Hammond hit 7 double hundreds for England in Tests while Len Hutton also scored four.

4 – Cook’s four double hundreds are the joint 3rd most for an opener in Tests. Marvan Atapattu and Virender Sehwag scored six double hundreds each while Graeme Smith had five. Gordon Greenidge and Len Hutton also had four double tons while opening the innings.

6 – Number of times Alastair Cook has batted for more than 9 hours in a Test inning; the joint 2nd most times by any player. Rahul Dravid batted over 9 hours on seven different occasions while Mahela Jayawardene also battled through similar knocks on six occasions.

243 – Cook’s 243 is the highest individual score coming to an end with a DRS review in Test cricket. The previous highest was 218 by Younis Khan against England during The Oval Test in 2016 where he reviewed the umpire’s LBW decision.

258.75 – Alastair Cook’s batting average in Tests while scoring double centuries is the 3rd best among the players with 4 or more double tons. Only Virender Sehwag (262.83) and Brian Lara (259.89) have a better average than Cook while scoring double hundreds in Tests.

2004 – England was the last team to post a 500+ total in the first innings of a Test at Birmingham. The home side scored 566/9 before declaring their innings against West Indies in 2004.
