On Sunday, India won their first ever bilateral T20I series in England, trouncing them in the three-match series. This was also India’s sixth consecutive T20I series win. They will now play England in three ODIs starting July 12. Summers in England mean the pitch is dryer than it usually is, which puts India’s bowling unit in an advantage.

In order to reclaim their no. 1 spot in ODIs, India need to whitewash England. And given the form the current Indian team is in, looks like they might do well in the longer format as well. Former India captain and batsman Sourav Ganguly, who has great personal records in England, is confident that India will perform well in the ODI series as well.

England’s bowling lacks fire

While accepting that England’s batting is competitive, Ganguly said that they lack strength in their bowling department, “England are a good side, they are a very good batting unit. But bowling is the weaker part of their game. India will fancy their chances against this English team (after) the way they won on Sunday, chasing 200,” said Ganguly, during the launch of his book, A Century is Not Enough, at the Lord’s Cricket Ground. “The Indian team has been doing well, enjoyed it (T20s). It is the start of a long series, first three ODIs, then five Tests, the team will do well,” he added.

Kohli should bat at no. 4 in ODIs

While India’s batting looks great at the moment, their batting positions’ conundrum is yet to be resolved. When skipper Virat Kohli came out to bat on no. 3 in ODIs, the top order fared well, but no. 4 slot is still being tested. As per Ganguly, Kohli should occupy the 4th position on the batting line-up, “Kohli has been batting at No. 4 (in T20Is), he is doing the right thing. That’s what he is going to do (going ahead).”

The ODI series will be followed by a Test series beginning on August 1, but the squad for that has not been announced yet.
