Team India is currently playing the only warm-up game against Essex ahead of the much-awaited five-match Test series. They opted to bat first after winning the toss as the top order was sent back early to leave them reeling at 44/3. The duo of Virat Kohli and Murali Vijay slammed half-centuries to bring the innings back on track after which Dinesh Karthik played a counter-attacking knock as the visitors ended day 1 on 322/6.

It was a great opportunity for the other batsmen to score runs on the second day but India were jolted with a couple of early blows in the first half hour. Karthik was sent back right away in the morning as Karun Nair strode out to the middle with a hope to make merry of the opposition.

But he couldn’t make the most of the chance and was castled by Aaron Beard in a rather unusual fashion. He went to play a full-fledged cover drive off a full delivery which was pitched probably on the sixth stump. Nair inside-edged the ball which thudded into his pads and rolled in the crease to eventually go and hit the stumps. Everything happened in a split second and even the batsman didn’t have any idea about. Nair could only muster 4 runs during his stay in the middle and his warm-up ended prematurely.

India post 395 runs

With an aim to give all the batsmen in the squad some time in the middle, India sent the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant at 10 and 11. The move reaped rich rewards as they added 41 runs for the last wicket with the latter attacking from the word go. He remained unbeaten on 34 runs off 26 balls as the visitors were bundled out for 395 runs. Hardik Pandya also impressed with a 51-run knock and now he will also be tipped to do the job with the ball.
