South African skipper Faf du Plessis has sought a clear response from the ICC over the usage of chewing gums on the cricket field. While these concerns might sound utterly absurd from the onset, when seen on a deeper level, it does make a lot of sense. The South African captain raised his concerns after the ICC recently released their new proposition of having stricter impositions in the cases of ball tampering.

The new rules suggest having a 6 Test ban or 12 ODIs ban for a player found guilty of ball tampering. Faf du Plessis has had his cases of ball tampering before and hence, wishes to know if having chewing gums on the field itself is banned or not. He cited the example of Hashim Amla who has always said that he likes having some sweets in his mouth whilst spending long time on the cricket field. Du Plessis’ next international assignment will be the tour of Sri Lanka.

“As Hashim Amla said, he likes putting sweets in his mouth when he spends a long time in the field, so there’s nothing wrong with it. I know they (ICC) met a while ago but it doesn’t look like anything has changed. It’s still the same rules and stuff, so they need to change that,” Faf du Plessis quoted as per the quotes in Zee News.

Clarity and consistency needed

Speaking further on the same note, Faf du Plessis remarked that there are certainly a lot of areas in the rules of the IPL on which there can be contrasting interpretations. Hence, to ensure that things stand uniformly among all the people involved with the game, it is of utmost importance to have clarity and consistency over the rules.

“I have probably said it too much but there are too many grey areas when it comes to the ICC and the rules. One, you want clarity and, two, you want consistency and that’s definitely something that’s not been part of that body of laws for a while now,” the South African skipper remarked.
