The South African team is in Sri Lanka and they will play a two-match Test series against a much inconsistent home team. The Lankans recently landed back home high on confidence having levelled the Test series in the Caribbean 1-1. They lost the first Test but made a remarkable comeback in the day-night game to draw things square. Ahead of the series Proteas skipper, Faf du Plessis suggested that Dale Steyn could feature in the first game.

Steyn has over the last year and a half struggled with injuries and has hardly played any cricket at the highest level. He is a part of the squad that has landed in the Island nation and has been bowling really well in the net sessions as the team gears up for the opening challenge.

He looks really good

The Test series kicks off on July 12 at the Galle International Stadium and the 35-year-old might as well be a part of the playing XI for the first match. Faf said that everything looks really good and all they want to confirm now is if the pacer is fit enough for the challenges of a Test match. Once they are sure about that, there’s no doubt Steyn will star in the team.

“He is back for the squad. He looks really good in the nets. Its about getting his fitness levels back up to where we need them to be for Test cricket,” he was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au with less than a week for the start of the series.

Steyn suffered an injury in November 2016, since then he has been struggling to make a sustainable comeback. He was declared fit for the home series against India but was ruled out of the rest of the tour after bowling in the first innings of the very first match.

In his bid to make an international comeback the pacer featured in the County championship and One-Day Cup matches in England and looked in good rhythm troubling quality batsmen in conditions that don’t absolutely favour the fast bowlers.

Sri Lanka and South Africa will play the two Tests at Galle and Colombo, the second match starts on July 20.
