The Supreme Court of India once again took on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today and asked the cricket governing body to implement the orders of the court or they would be forced to do so. The stern warning was issued after the Justice R M Lodha panel had asked for the removal of the top office bearers of the BCCI, including its President Anurag Thakur and Secretary Ajay Shirke as they had not complied to the directives issued by the SC.

In its report filed with the court, the Lodha panel had asked for the removal of the top BCCI officials most of whom have a political background and for cricket administrators to be appointed as replacement.

The counsel who represented the panel in front of the apex court said that the board was neither replying to their emails nor any other communications sent to them and at the same time were working against the court’s orders.

The bench hearing the case is headed by Chief Justice of India, T S Thakur along with Justice A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud. In its statement, the bench said, “If the BCCI thinks that they are law unto themselves, then they are wrong. They have to comply with the directions of the court,”

“You (BCCI) are behaving like Lords. Fall in line otherwise we will make you fall in line,” the bench said, adding that, “BCCI is bringing the system to disrepute by not following the directions”.

Arvind Datar the counsel of the Indian cricket board in the case told the bench that the board has followed most of the directives and are looking at implementing all of it gradually.

Replying to his argument the bench said, “Law needs not to be defied. We are not happy about the things going on. We anticipated this approach from BCCI but this is not done. You will have to fall in line with the directions of the court.”

The next hearing in the case is slated for October 6.
