In a recent development, it has been revealed that some squad members of Vijay Mallya-owned Barbados Tridents are still awaiting full payment of their wages following the 2017 Caribbean Premier League (CPL). According to sources a few Trident cricketers and support staffs haven’t got their full payment yet.
The outstanding amount which is due has been calculated to be ranging from US$10,000 to more than US$100,000. Though everyone thought that the matter would be resolved ahead of the end of 2017, cricketers are still waiting for the payments and have also threatened the franchise to take legal action against them.
The Indian business tycoon, who is charged with money laundering and is currently living in the UK took over the franchise prior to the last season. He had to pay only an amount of $100 during the franchise transfer process but later Mallya admitted that the overall cost of managing the side would be almost $2 million including all the wages and annual franchise amount. Unlike the Indian Premier League, the Caribbean Premier League doesn’t have a revenue-sharing model and they have to earn money to manage the team by ticket and merchandise sales and sponsorship.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, a CPL spokesperson said, “The Caribbean Premier League are aware of the issue with regard to the outstanding final payments that are owed to certain members of the Barbados Tridents squad and we are working with the franchise to rectify this as soon as possible.”
He added, “For the league, this is an unacceptable situation and we are currently going through a due process in order for all of the players to be paid in the shortest time frame possible.”
An embarrassing state of affairs of CPL organizers
Issues such as this have a damaging effect on the credibility of the tournament in the eyes of the world’s players who rightly expect their contracts to be honoured in full and on time. In an increasingly packed calendar, attracting the best players is a vital part of the success of any T20 tournament and anything which puts that at risk will be a worry for the CPL organisers.
It is an embarrassing state of affairs for the league organisers who are trying to position the tournament as one of the foremost T20 leagues in the world.
