The Indian Premier League (IPL) opened a new gateway of opportunities to so many youngsters in the country. It gave them a great chance to earn big paychecks, rub shoulders with some of the finest coaches and cricketers in the world and most importantly, they were in the limelight, playing in front of huge crowds.

Not many saw that the tournament could have some other repercussions, like destroying the confidence of players and snatching them a chance of representing even their state teams, whenever they couldn’t perform in the IPL. The tournament had a huge impact on the confidence levels of youngsters, for the good and bad reasons.

Here are five cricketers who played IPL in the 2008 season and a few editions after that, but could never make it big in the industry:

Karnataka’s Bharat Chipli played for the state side during their golden run in the domestic circuit under Vinay Kumar’s captaincy between 2013 and 2015, where they won the Ranji Trophy twice in a row. He wasn’t a regular feature in the team, but showed a lot of promise and managed to earn a decent IPL contract on more than one occasion.

In the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League, he was a part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore and got to play three matches. The Royal Challengers ended up 7th on the table that edition, but came back strongly next time to finish runners up. After the first season, he didn’t appear for the Bangalore side in the next two seasons.

He then played all 14 games in 2011 for Deccan Chargers played five games in the 2012 edition. After the Ranji trophy success with Karnataka, he lost his position in the team.
