Former South African cricketer Davy Jacobs has been appointed as the captain of Canadian National cricket team. After relocating to Canada to coach the Ontario Cricket Academy, the 35-year-old has decided to serve the country as a player as well, eventually becoming the captain of the national side.

His first major assignment as their captain will come in the West Indies’ Super50 Cup in Trinidad and Tobago. The tournament will kick-start on October 3 and the final will be played on 28th October. The Canadians lost their chance of qualifying for the World Cup next year, but they want to give it their best shot to feature in the World T20 in 2020.

Jacobs never made an International appearance for South Africa but featured on a lot of occasions for the South Africa ‘A’ side. He also captained the SA Sixes side that participated in the Hong Kong Sixes tournament in 2009. He previously announced his retirement from professional cricket back in 2015.

A string of good performances in the 2010 Champions League for the Warriors saw Jacobs gain the attention of IPL franchise Mumbai Indians. They eventually bought his services in the next auction and he played seven games for the three-time IPL champions. He registered 92 runs for the side and opened the batting in all the seven games.

The wicket-keeper batsman played in 91 first-class matches scoring 5,520 runs and took 114 catches. In 106 List A (one-day) games, he hit 2,591 runs and caught 98 catches. Moreover, in 83 T20s, he notched 1707 runs and took 39 catches.

The Ontario Cricket Club released an official statement congratulating their new captain. “As the most experienced and accomplished player in the team, Davy will be playing a key role in the country’s success in moving up the ranks of world cricket. ⁣This is certainly a proud moment for all of us at the Ontario Cricket Academy and we all wish Davy and his troops the very best in this tournament and for the future. Go Davy! Go Canada!” they said via their official Facebook handle.
