Former South African opener and Indian head coach during the 2011 World Cup triumph, Gary Kirsten is one of the most respected personalities in the Indian cricket fraternity. He took over the job after a disastrous stint under Greg Chappell and proved to be a game changer. He helped the players settle in and under the leadership of MS Dhoni, the young Indian side achieved great heights.

Kirsten was always at the helm of affairs, providing ample technical and mental support to the cricketers. His reign ended with the 2011 World Cup triumph and former Zimbabwean cricketer Ducan Fletcher took over the responsibilities. Kirsten complimented Fletcher and Dhoni for their success during the transition period which smoothened the process.

“I think Duncan Fletcher and MS Dhoni played a huge role in creating an environment for young players to thrive. This has really helped younger players to deal with the trials and tribulations of international competition,” Kirsten was quoted as saying on TOI.

Not every environment is suited to one’s coaching style: Kirsten

Despite achieving great success with the Indian cricket team, Kirsten failed to replicate similar success in the IPL. He was appointed as the Head Coach of the Delhi Daredevils and this season, he’s working with the Royal Challengers Bangalore as the batting consultant. He said that coaching these days is measured by statistical data and not everyone can adapt to a particular coaching style.

“Not every environment is suited to one’s coaching style and philosophy. Although coaches are measured by the results of a team, the bigger picture often reflects what kind of an impact a coach had on a player. We as coaches often take more pleasure out of watching individuals thrive under one’s leadership,” said Kirsten.

He has partnered with Grassroots Sports Academy to offer state-of-the-art coaching to aspiring youngsters. “I am excited about partnering up with Grassroots Sports Academy to offer a coaching service to those who not only play for enjoyment but also have aspirations to play at a higher level.
