Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Gautam Gambhir has come in support of the Rising Pune Supergiants skipper MS Dhoni. The RPS skipper has been targeted by the critics and media as his team is virtually out of the IPL this season. Only a miracle can take them to the playoffs.

This will be for the first time in the history of the IPL that MS Dhoni-led side will not be making it to the playoffs. The critics believe his time as the supreme leader is over. But Gambhir spoke in support of Dhoni in his column for the Hindustan Times recently. Gambhir said that it is only unfair to blame Dhoni for the RPS debacle. He explained that it is the team that makes the leader and not the other way.

“My inference is pretty simple, and something I have always maintained. A captain is as good as his team. It would be wrong to blame captain Dhoni for the situation that Pune are in as he has tried his best. In the past, critics have panned me for clinging on to the thought that ‘a captain is as good as his team’,” wrote Gautam Gambhir.

He asserted further saying that if Dhoni gets the likes of Raina, Bravo and McCullum in his side, the entire scenario would change. “Get in Raina, Bravo, McCullum and Jadeja and Dhoni’s captaincy will run on autopilot. That further underlines my belief that a captain is as good as his team” the KKR skipper added further.

He also rubbished all claims of feud between him and Dhoni. Rumors were rife that Gambhir never credited his success to Dhoni but the KKR opener believed otherwise. He said, “Some have even called me a Dhoni detractor who was loathed to credit him for victories of the India team but that is far from true.”

“Perhaps, in India we tend to forget that cricket is a team sport and focus too much on individuals,” he concluded.
